Air Fryer Steak

Air fryer steak is a cooking method where steak is cooked using an air fryer, which is a kitchen appliance that uses hot air to circulate and cook food. The result is a juicy and flavorful steak that is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.

To cook air fryer steak, the steak is seasoned and then placed in the air fryer basket, which is then cooked at a high temperature for a few minutes on each side. The cooking time and temperature can vary depending on the type and thickness of the steak, as well as personal preference for the level of doneness.

No searing, no re-cooking. No adjusting the temperature. Preparing steak in the hot air fryer makes your steak dinner so darn easy!

What you need

Steak: Find a steak that is about one centimetre thick. Any steak will do.

Soft butter: For your compound butter. For garnishing and serving! Optional, but worth it!

Garlic: For your compound butter.

Herbs: Like parsley, thyme, rosemary, etc. For the compound butter. For garnishing and serving! Optional, but worth it!

To what temperature should the steak be cooked?

This depends on the size and thickness of the steak you are using. Here are my estimates for a 1 inch steak. If you are using a thicker or thinner steak, adjust the cooking time accordingly! To make sure your steak is cooked just right, I recommend measuring the internal temperature with a meat thermometer.

Here's a quick guide to temperature!

Rare: Roast the steaks for 6 minutes, turning after 3 minutes. Make sure the temperature is 125ºF.

Medium: Roast the steaks for 8 minutes and turn them after 4 minutes. Make sure the temperature is 135ºF.

Medium: Roast the steaks for 10 minutes and turn them after 5 minutes. Make sure the temperature is 145 ºF.

Medium-rare: Roast the steaks for 12 minutes and turn them after 6 minutes. Make sure the temperature is 155 ºF.

Good: Roast the steaks for 16 minutes and turn them after 8 minutes. Make sure the temperature is 160 ºF.

Do you have to turn a steak in the deep fryer?

Yes! If you turn the steak halfway through the cooking time, it will be cooked evenly and you will get a perfect crust all around.

Tips and advice

Bring the steak to room temperature. I recommend placing the steak on the counter about 30 minutes before cooking. At room temperature, the steak will cook more evenly. This step is not crucial, but you should allow the meat to cool as much as possible so that it is less shocked during cooking. The result is a more tender steak, but of course that doesn't mean you shouldn't cook the steak if you can't do this step.

Pat the steak dry. Gently pat the outside of the steak dry with paper towels before seasoning and cooking. Removing excess moisture will help the steak to crisp up in the fryer.

Preheat the hot air fryer. It should be nice and hot before you put the steak in so it cooks just right!

Check the temperature. Since the cooking time varies depending on the size and thickness of the steak, I recommend measuring the internal temperature with a meat thermometer. That way, there's no more guesswork! We talk about taking the temperature so often here at Lexi's Clean Kitchen because it's such a simple tool that makes you a better cook. Check the meat with an instant-read thermometer towards the end of cooking to make sure it's at the exact temperature you want.

Leave some space. Avoid overcrowding the deep fryer, i.e. the steaks should not touch each other. This will allow the air to circulate evenly around the steaks.

Let it rest. Before serving the steak, cover it with foil to keep the heat in and let it rest for 5 minutes. This gives the flavour and moisture a little time to settle back into the meat.

Make a quick butter mixture!

You don't have to, but trust me, it will enhance your steak and can be made in a minute.

What is blended butter?

Blended butter is butter that has been softened and mixed with herbs, spices and sometimes a sweetener. The result is a creamy spread that goes great on your steak!

Ingredients

2 1 inch thick steaks or 4 smaller steaks

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon sea salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Butter mixture

2 tablespoons salted softened butter

1 clove chopped garlic

1 teaspoon fresh herbs of choice: parsley, coriander, thyme, rosemary

Instructions

Remove the steaks and leave to come to room temperature for 15-30 minutes.

Pat dry, brush with olive oil and season generously with salt and pepper.

Preheat the hot air fryer so that the basket is hot.

Place the steaks in and deep fry at 400ºF for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through (this is for a 1 inch steak, smaller steaks will cook faster). See temperature chart below as time may vary depending on fryer model and thickness of steaks. Note: Take the steak out 5 degrees earlier than the chart indicates, as the temperature of the steak will rise during the resting time, and you want it to rest!

While the steak is cooking, mix the softened butter with the garlic and herbs. Set aside.

Once the steak is done, let it rest for 5-10 minutes, brush with butter and slice.

Serve hot with your favourite side dishes!
